UMFST INTERNATIONAL. Why Study Religion in Eastern Europe? A Conversation with Catherine Wanner

UMFST. This conversation with Professor Catherine Wanner examines the opportunities, challenges, and limitations involved in studying religion at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Drawing on Professor Wanner’s extensive expertise in the anthropology of religion and the religious history of Ukraine and Eastern Europe, the discussion explores current directions in the field across the region, the histories of understudied religious communities in Ukraine, and how the ongoing war has affected research on religion, as well as access to religious communities and sources. It also considers what the Ukrainian case can reveal about the broader challenges and possibilities of studying religion in Eastern European contexts, including Romania.
